Texas A&M athletics simply cannot catch a break. The department’s top three sports have been through the ringer over the last few seasons.

The most recent adversity caused a freezing cold take to resurface on social media. It comes just as the Aggies were rejected by their top replacement candidate in the search for a basketball coach.

Just under four years ago, things appeared to be looking up for a school desperately seeking national acclaim. A trio of high-profile coaches made their homes in College Station in hopes of bringing championships to Texas A&M.

Jimbo Fisher was heading into Year 4 with the football program, fresh off a 9-1 season and near-playoff appearance. Buzz Williams was entering Year 3 on the hardwood in what would be the start of four straight 20-win seasons. Jim Schlossnagle was hired in the summer of 2021 to lead the baseball program after multiple College World Series runs at TCU.

Excitement was at an all-time high. Texas A&M insider Billy Liucci was able to capture the feeling in one simple tweet. It aged very poorly in the years to follow.

“First comes commitment, then the right coaches, then the culture change. Jimbo, Buzz, and Schloss have been in Aggieland a combined 5 years and 5 minutes,” the post read. “Next come the championships.”

The Aggies fell short of expectations.

None of those three coaches are currently with the school. Championship aspirations were never met.

Jimbo Fisher was fired in the middle of the 2023 season after going 11-11 in his final 22 games. He failed to bring home a title of any kind, either at the conference or national level.

His most successful achievement was landing (buying) the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022. Like Fisher’s career, it, too, unraveled.

Schlossnagle’s exit was much different, as was his success on the field. The baseball coach led the Aggies to a pair of College World Series appearances in three years. He fell one game shy of a national title in his final season before traitorously bailing for rival Texas.

Buzz Williams was the last of the trio to leave. This week, he made his move out of College Station and to College Park.

The basketball coach accepted a job offer from Maryland after leading the Aggies to three straight NCAA Tournaments. Billy Luicci responded to his newfound virality as his cold take resurfaced.

Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse for the Ags soon thereafter.

Texas A&M swung and missed on Chris Beard.

Beard, who’d previously been berated by Aggie fans over his controversial exit at Texas, is now the head coach at Ole Miss. In Year 2, he led the Rebels to the Sweet 16.

Texas A&M had hoped to pry him away from Oxford as Buzz Williams’ replacement. It failed.

Chris Beard has informed Ole Miss he’s staying at the school, sources tell me and @jeffborzello. He’d engaged in significant discussions with Texas A&M, but he ultimately decided to stay at Ole Miss. He’s set to receive a raise, more resources for staff and a strong NIL package. pic.twitter.com/5N0g629V6I

Beard leveraged the Aggies’ interest into a pay raise and NIL bump with his current employer. He should be leading the Rebels for the foreseeable future.

Chris Beard spent a combined seven seasons coaching at Texas and Texas Tech. He spurned the idea of a return to the Lone Star State with his latest rejection.

Texas A&M will now move down its list of coaching candidates after missing on its top option. For the fanbase’s sake, hopefully the next hire proves to be successful.
