The layoffs come as the Trump administration continues to shrink the size of the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will slash its workforce by at least 25% beginning Friday with layoffs as the Trump administration continues to shrink the size of the federal government.
In addition to the layoffs, the agency said in a letter to employees that it is eliminating its Office of Civil Rights and Compliance, which is responsible for protecting taxpayers from discrimination, audits and investigations.
The remaining employees in the division will be transferred to other departments.
"In a stark contrast to the previous administration’s wildly unpopular plan to hire thousands of additional IRS agents, President Trump is focused on saving tax dollars, eliminating bloat, axing useless DEI offices, and increasing the agency’s efficiency," White House spokesperson Liz Huston said to Fox News Digital.
"This action is being taken to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the IRS in accordance with agency priorities and the Workforce Optimization Initiative outlined in a recent Executive Order," the letter states, referring to President Donald Trump's executive order directing the Department of Government Efficiency to get rid of wasteful spending.
The agency said it was approved to offer Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA) and Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP). Information about those programs will be shared with employees at a later date, the message said.
"This calendar year to date, approximately 5% of this office left through the Deferred Resignation Program and attrition, An additional 75% of the office will be reduced through a RIF (Reduction in Force)."
A Treasury Department spokesperson told Fox News that the reductions are part of, and driven by, "process improvements and technological innovations that will allow the IRS to collect revenue and serve taxpayers more effectively."

I suggest they use aptitude tests (aka IQ tests) for ranking candidates applying for professional federal civil service jobs in the future. They used to have such tests but, as I understand it, eliminated them starting sometime in the 1970’s because too many “disadvantaged” applicants couldn’t succeed at getting hired.
I blame the absence of such screening tests for the huge number of essentially STUPID federal civil service employees, from all racial/ethnic groups, that I encounter when conducting business with the federal government.

Clean out the IRS armory.
Take away all their rifles, other firearms, ammunition and all of their tactical gear.
fire all their tactical/SWAT teams and related management or transfer them all to the military if they are qualified.

Why does the IRS have a Civil Rights office?
I understand one for the justice department but the tax collectors?

The IRS needs a MAGA dose of the “E” of DOGE.
I admit to being a Luddite a.k.a. paper form filer.
Ordered all the paper forms I needed on January 23.
By early March I had given up on receiving them so picked up most of what I needed at the local IRS office.
Mailed my paper forms on April 1 (no Fooling!)
FINALLY received the thick envelope of requested paper forms on April 3.
A little late—straight into the circular file.

You can print all forms right off the irs.gov website and never leave home.

Yup...making me burn my toner, paper, and electricity.
“Tax-shifting” by any other name would smell as foul.
BTW I remember the days when the 1040 would arrive promptly on December 26. Happy Grinchmass!

I have no knowledge of the size, scope, and mission of this armory department but it appears to me to be totally unnecessary. Aren’t there other Federal agencies responsible for interventions that require weaponry? I thought so.

Its very real. Contracts are also being cancelled there hand over fist. The explosive lib pipe dream of expanding this is over.

Excellent! The IRS needed to be radically slashed. I dunno if a 25% cut is the right number or if it needs to be even more but this is clearly a step in the right direction.

I believe the backlog for processing some of the difficult filings is about 2 years. I missed a w-2 from my company after i retired last year haven’t heard a peep. It was only for a couple hundred dollars so it probably won’t impact the filing but still. Never had to wait that long for that type of mistake.
