The growing popularity of suppressors among both hunters and tactical shooters has brought increased attention to the various mounting systems available on the market. When selecting a suppressor, the mounting system is a critical consideration that directly impacts performance, convenience, and versatility.
The two primary mounting types—direct thread and quick-detach (QD)—each offer distinct advantages and disadvantages depending on your specific needs and usage scenarios. This comprehensive comparison examines both systems through the lens of practical application, helping you determine which option best suits your particular requirements.
Whether you’re a hunter seeking noise reduction in the field or a tactical shooter needing rapid deployment capabilities, understanding the nuances of these mounting systems will guide you toward making an informed decision.

Well, now that the House has passed the "Big Beautiful Bill", which currently has suppressors removed from the NFA, maybe we'll all be buying some more?
No, I don't really expect that the senate will fully remove them from the NFA at this time, but at minimum we'll get the tax reduced or eliminated. Which isn't what I would prefer, but I'll take as a first step, if we can't yeet the NFA part at this time.
But now the fun part. There are so many more options now than even ten years ago. I always liked the QD option, since I could buy one good suppressor for, say, 5.56 and just swap the can onto whichever rifle I wanted to take to the range that day.
But maybe now, if (and let me dream here), we can buy a new can at Home Depot, why not have a direct thread for every gun? No more POA/POI deviation, no matter how small.
Thoughts?

What did they finally pass? Removal or just reduction in tax?

What passed this morning appears to have them removed from NFA regulation. The cynic in me thinks that there is no way that the senate will go for that, but I’m not going to blackpill myself in advance.
Of course, I, like most at FR would prefer that the NFA itself be yeeted, but i’ll take any progress as a “win” at this point.
Still trying to find the section on SBR’s, I don’t think that made it in this round, but I’ll keep looking.
From a political negotiation standpoint, IMHO, the smart move would be:
Pass a ‘strong’ bill in the house — remove SBR’s and suppressors from the NFA entirely.
Then when the horse-trading starts, try to get as much as possible on both items.
From the base, we need to keep the pressure on. If we (let me dream here) get suppressors removed, we say “thanks”, but you need to act on SBR’s. If we were to get both, we say “thanks, now repeal the NFA in its entirety”. The left never stops, we need to take a page from their book and keep the pressure up!

I’m not 100 clear on it, but from what I’d seen from Jared over at Guns & Gadgets it sounds like the removal from the NFA, which I’ll take. Reducing the stamp cost and keeping the registry is unacceptable.
And, direct thread for pistols and rimfire. QD for rifles in the same caliber.

I think on hearing protection, disruption to the neighbors, common sense and new equipment sales lobby there should not be much push back. The plan seems to be keep the typical hold out will be distracted in the phone bank calls by “saving medicade” for the illegals.
Gun control has been “two hands, nose over toes” for better than a decade. Think enough of the moderates are ready to piledrive the other party, they will ignore a few phone calls.

A suppressor is on my list but I’m waiting to see how this plays out. I’ve done my h/w tho and would get a QD mount. Those on my list are set up so they mate with a taper. I think the taper mostly holds them together but theres enough thread to unlock when the time comes. The more threads the greater the risk of having them eventually seize. I’m well acquainted with someone who owns a thread on and he’s never had a problem. He doesn’t shoot thousands of rounds in a session and always takes the suppressor off when done. So I think unless you’re in a prolonged combat situation either type will serve well if you use good hygiene.
I think the more important question is vent out the front or back in your face. To me I’d say only front vent. Getting more gas in your face is annoying and very distracting.

I use the threaded ones. It really helps balance the weight of a rifle, particularly a heavy one like an AR-10 with ‘accessories.’
I leave it one. Great for night time hog hunts as it completely eliminates the flash from blinding your night vision.
FYI hog hunting in GA is 7 X365, 24 hours a day. Baited fields OK.
220 grain subsonic 308. shots less than 70 yards. Boom —> hog down. DRT.

You never win being sinical. A childishly fragile ego needs to make excuses for a loss yet to happen but a healthy mature adult ego does not.
This can pass. No one really gives a shit about silencers. They have no resistance against them to keep them illegal.
Europe actually requires them in many locations.

I’ll believe it when I see it. In DC, they actually mostly believe that J6 was an actual insurrection. They are not going to help us get better armed. And it’s pretty obvious if you can buy a silencer the way you can a scope or any other accessory, the gangs will raise absolute freaking hell.
They aren’t going to pass this.

SHORT didn’t make it. Whisper pickles removed entirely.
Senate is ‘tarded... We need to find someone to put a size 15 boot on our Quisling Senate GOP turncoats to keep them from doing anything Democrat.

Anytown and other hoplophobic commie orgs are already flooding their membership with “silent blood in the streets” BS about silencers...
We need to keep pressure on to make sure the liberals in the GOP are cowed into doing the right thing.

I’d be glad to see them legalized. Maybe it would reduce the overall cost. As it is, there is no way they collectively have the intrinsic cost they’re charging for them now.

There is only a 22LR suppressor in my collection. Still NIB. It is intended for use on my wife's Ruger pistols and my bolt action Ruger .22LR for rabbit hunting.
I built a 300BLK with 10.5" barrel and SBR lower. The long term plan is to give a it can and use for hog hunting. The "plan" may be a bit late in execution with my age 68 and retiring. Many of my other rifles might benefit, but I have no serious interest in adding a can to them.

Some of the hk mp 5 clones come with both a threaded barrel and a tri-lug system. Have used neither. I wonder if they are going to require a background check if the hypothetical law goes through. Anyone know? Also, is a suppressed straight blowback much if any louder than a suppressed bolt or locked breech? I’ve always heard that locked breech is the better host for suppression but have no practical experience.
