It's Rand Paul and Elon Musk vs. Donald Trump Over the 'Big Beautiful Bill'

Paul said he refuses to support "maintaining Biden spending levels," and Musk said the Trump-backed tax bill is "a disgusting abomination."

The intra-Republican fight over the future of a major tax and borrowing bill intensified on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump lashed out and former White House favorite Elon Musk offered a sharp criticism of the proposal.

The whole thing played out, as today's political dramas so often do, in a series of posts on social media.

Trump slammed Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) in a Tuesday morning post on Truth Social that accused the senator of having "very little understanding" of the so-called Big Beautiful Bill (BBB), which the House passed last week. The bill would extend the 2017 personal income tax cuts and includes a number of new tax and spending provisions.

Trump wrote that the bill is a big "WINNER." He may see it that way, but every independent assessment of the package says it will add at least $3 trillion to the long-term deficit (and potentially as much as $5 trillion). That means the bill is doing the opposite of what Trump vowed to do in March during his speech to Congress, when he promised to balance the budget.

The prospect of that increased borrowing is at the root of Paul's objections. In a post on X, Paul seemingly responded to Trump's criticism by showing that he understands exactly what the BBB would do.

"The math doesn't add up," Paul wrote. "I'm not supporting a bill that increases the debt by $5 [trillion]. I refuse to support maintaining Biden spending levels."

It's a Senate showdown!

Can Rand and conservative allies defeat the bill or get substantial changes? Who wins? Who are you rooting for?

This debate will be interesting. One for the ages.

Very misleading title.

Trump said the Senate should indeed make the BBB better.

Elon criticized Congress, not Trump.

From the above facts, it looks like it's Trump and Elon against do-nothing Rand.

Not enough people in the white house or Congress are serious about debt reduction.

In the very least they should be jamming DOGE initiatives into every spending bill. While departments should be closed and sold off before Christmas.

The bill is going to the senate as is from what I gather

The DOGE bill cuts 9 billion

A paltry sum. And they’re struggling to get votes for that

They’re just not serious like you say

Musk doesn’t get a vote, but Rand does and will be voting with the RATS. And Elon has criticized Republicans for not codifying DOGE cuts, not President Trump. BS article title.

You might be right about the wrangling.

Will GOP leaders put a flawed bill to a vote? I dont know. I can’t predict what Thune will do

If it goes to a vote it can be defeated.

More likely horse trading takes place like you say and it doesn’t get a vote if defeat is certain.

The ball is in the Senates court now. Talkative Rand should lead the charge, to change the bill to make it better, to get 51 votes in the Senate and to then send it back to the House.

Thune’s latest comments:

“We obviously respect everything that Elon did with DOGE. On this particular issue, we have a difference of opinion. We’re going to proceed full speed ahead.”

Rand Paul has supported and defended Trump for years - from phony Russia-gate, to impeachment, to dealings with Russia

Yes, Trump needs legislative victories, but he should reach out to obvious allies like Paul, Roy, or Massie. Not attack them

It just empowers cynical and smooth backstabbers like Lindsey Graham

Trump is not a preson who says, OK I’ll give up this very important thing in order to get this other very important thing. He wants it all. That’s the art of the deal. Anyone who thinks Elon and Trump aren’t together on this hasn’t been paying attention to the relationship between the two men.

Haha. You think you and Rand’s ship has finally come in. Haha. You are a sick little psyop. Elon’s too smart to hitch his wagon to Rand Paul of all people. Rand is a weak, weak horse, a political nonentity. Rand is just acting as an errand boy for The GOP establishment sent to derail The President’s agenda. He cares nothing about the country.

To: McCarthysGhost

Elon is going to bankroll Rand Paul, etc. for the presidency.

Preach it

.... it's great to see the GOP coming together in unity to tear each other apart to achieve the Democrat goal of plunging MAGA into the weeds when there is only a few months left to accomplish the MAGA agenda before the nation is embroiled in Midterm Politics.

..... Its the Democrats wet dream that they have been hoping for since the new Trump term began .... only a few months ago.....

Elon said this on X:

“Elon Musk

I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore.

This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination”.

Does not sound good to me. Last thing we need is more spending.

another make rand paul look good for president 2028 thread.....

because do nothing rand paul is showing he can obstruct Trump from getting what Trump wants, done....

Since rand is already testing iowa...

How about discussing rand's position on illegal aliens... you know, is comments about legalizing the perpetual 11 million (really likely >30 million) illegals that are in this country....

Or how he wants to have it both ways with marijuanna, saying he wants states to let people to have the freedom to use marijuanna.... but he's not going to advocate for it...

or how rand talks about racial disparities with how blacks are treated in dealing with drugs or other crimes...

or how rand pushed for dei by pushing a bill to have at a minimum, one minority candidate interviewed for all management positions...

To: backpacker_c

lol you can’t stand him can you...

The idea of the leftists is to talk this into a battle between Trump and Musk. People shouldn’t fall for it. It isn’t.

They want a huge divide and rift. Have any of us actually seen what is in this bill yet?

I am sure the bill is a pork filled mess and Congress has once again blown it.
