247Sports links former Notre Dame coach to potentially replace Brian Kelly at LSU
  • LSU has fired head coach Brian Kelly, creating a high-profile job opening in college football.

The firing of Brian Kelly by LSU sent waves across college football, as there are now numerous high-profile jobs that need to be filled.

The Tigers might be the most enticing one of all, as they have a long history of top-end play. Kelly was their first coaching hire over the last four to fail to bring a championship back to Baton Rouge. The job has high expectations, and while they’re going the interim route right now, they’ll surely be looking for a permanent pick soon.

247Sports released its early Head Coaching Hot Board (subscription required), and a former Notre Dame coach made the list in Clark Lea. He’s already been linked to the Penn State job, and now LSU. He’s transformed the Vanderbilt program into a College Football Playoff contender, without the resources of a top school. Lea is going to be a wanted man during the off-season, as many teams with open positions will be seeing if he’s interested.

Sonny Shipp and Glenn West comprised the list, which did include current Irish head coach Marcus Freeman. He’s also one of the rising coaches in the profession, but they did note that him leaving Notre Dame most likely wasn’t in the cards.

It would be interesting if Lea took over for Kelly, as that would make back-to-back former Irish coaches being the lead man for LSU. Time will tell if he’s interested in the job, but we know one thing, Lea is one of the top names for open coaching positions.
