...master Army aviator told Breitbart News that they had been at risk for years.

In fact, the aviator said, the Army was so strapped for experienced pilots that up through 2023 it was sending its most junior pilots fresh out of flight school to fly these specialized missions. At one point, an estimated 40 percent of the pilots assigned to these missions, which can include evacuating leaders in the event of an attack, were on their first assignment, the aviator said.

“D.C. is some of the most challenging and restricted airspace in the country if not the world, so you can’t just send the most junior pilots there...

“”DEI?”””

Maybe it’s like what they did for training air traffic controllers, require that a good percentage of the spots were saved for DEI people. What could possibly go wrong?

Somebody got confused and thought flying a helicopter was like driving a Jeep. It’s a bit more complicated than that.

Local girl here was flight attendant and joyfully announced on Facebook that she has been accepted for flight school training — Delta.

Kids were not signing up for the Woke Military so they filled slots with untrained pilots.

Hey, I know how to start a Huey! Death would soon follow.

I would prefer that our leadership be evacuated by the completely untrained in the event of an attack.

No one who is not fully qualified and experienced should be flying around DC, until then.

I was an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker for several years. I still work there, but now as a civilian.

There is a lot more to this than meets the eye. Newly graduated pilots go to every unit (with the exception of 160th SOAR) and are trained there accordingly. The new pilots must go through a Readiness Level progression where they must complete every task in that unit’s Unit Training List (list of tasks required from that unit) to standard as evaluated by either and instructor pilot, or standardization instructor pilot before they are allowed to fly without an instructor pilot, but will still be paired with a Pilot-in-Command as they are not ready for Pilot-in-Command status.

There is a legitimate argument that the average experience of Aviators has gone down due to the retirement of our high-time GWOT pilots (I’m one of them). There is an argument that the quality of all pilots has diminished to some degree.

However, simply sending newly rated Aviators to a unit like this is nothing new. There is a tried and true process the Army uses to validate the skill and capability of Aviators before they are allowed to be “signed off” to go to work without an instructor pilot.

Just thought I’d provide a bit of insight since there’s so much weeping and gnashing of teeth over something that’s been the status quo for, well, at least the 22 years of my career.

Good point.

I always liked flying with the old breed, the crustiest of the crusty CW4s whenever possible. Maintenance test pilots even better. If something goes wrong, you want a guy that at least understands the problem. Maybe he can pull our chestnuts out of the fire.

Right or wrong, the VIP support units have (or had) the effect of poaching or cherry picking both resources and the experienced aviators from the regular line units. It’s a good gig, no field duty or deployments for one thing.

“....flying a helicopter was like driving a Jeep....”

Very easy to land......just take your hands and feet off the controls.

They land automatically a few seconds later.

thank you for youre input

\/

id like to ask a question about this statement

“However, simply sending newly rated Aviators to a unit like this is nothing new. There is a tried and true process the Army uses to validate the skill and capability of Aviators before they are allowed to be “signed off” to go to work without an instructor pilot.”

\/

by “ a unit like this “

...do you refer to a unit flying in D.C. ?

if not , ,,then the unit is not “ like this “

and the gnashing of teeth IS warranted.

ymmv
